t English ISU Prologue Milkweed: Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Spinelli (Maniac McGee, Stargirl) paints a graphic picture of the streets of the Nazi-occupied Warsaw during World War II, as seen by means of the eyes of a curious, kind, heartbreakingly naïve orphan with umteen holds. His name is Stopthief when people shout Stop! Thief! as he flees with stolen bread. Or its Jew, filthy son of Abraham, depending on whos public lecture to him. Or, possibly hes a Gypsy, because his eyes are black, his skin is dark, and he wears a mysterious yellow stone just or so his neck. His new trembler and protector Uri forces him to take the name Misha Pilsudski and to hear a represent story about his Gypsy accent so that no one will mistake him for a Jew and kill him. Misha, a very young boy, is slow to record whats happening rough him. When he sees people running, he thinks its a race. Nazis ( jackboots, as the children visit them) marching through the streets appear to h im as a scrumptious parade of magnificent boots. He hell qua nons to be a Jackboot! (Uri smacks him for saying this.) He compares bombs to sauerkraut kettles, railway car guns to praying mantises, and tanks to colossal gray long-snouted beetles. The story of Misha and his band of orphans try to survive on their birth would have a deliciously Dickensian quality, if it werent for the devastation around them--people hurrying to dig trenches to hold off Nazi tanks, shops exploding in flames, the lamenting of sirens, buzzing airplanes, bombs, and human torture. Spinelli has compose a powerfully mournful story of survival--readers will fill out Misha the dreamer and his wonderfully poetical observations of the world around him, his mind to befriend a Jewish girl and her family, his impulse to separate food for a local orphanage and his friends in the ghetto, and his power to delight in minor(ip) things even surrounded by the iniquity of the Holocaust.
